The gunpowder plot was a conspiracy against catholicism repression during the 17th century. In 1605, James I was the king of England and Scotland, and he was a strong believer in protestants's faith. Furthermore, he excluded catholics from public jobs and suppressed their civil rights. So, as a response to that ubearable situation, a group of Catholics led by a country gentleman called Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes, a soilder, decided to kill the king and blow up the Parliament on November 5th. They stored barrels of gunpowder in a cellar of the building and Guy Fakwes was the one who had to set fire to the barrels, but he couldn't because he was caught red handed. Nowadays, on the 5th of November, it is celebrated Bonfire Night in Britain, a ceremony in which they build bonfires and on top of each one, they put a figure of Guy Fawkes and they throw fireworks as celebration.
